Greensboro

Greensboro. Where to start.

Unlike all of my previous visits to the South (see Austin, Savannah and Charleston, Asheville plus, Atlanta, Memphis, and Nashville) where I spent a weekend or a few days in each city, Greensboro was Marissa’s home for two years. Therefore, I got to visit this little city multiple times and really get a feel for what it’s all about, so I thought it would be a fitting way to end my series on the South.

Since my trips there were all pretty random and there were no set itineraries for any of it, I’m going to structure this like I did my New York post – here’s what I did and here’s a picture of it in no particular order other than the order that the pictures exist in my folders.

Insane inflatable 5K. This is not a Greensboro specific event, but it was super fun. Find one in your area and do it (I just checked and it’s not looking good for 2019, better luck next year). You don’t have to be a runner, you can just walk between the inflatables. We did a lot of walking.

I gardened. Or, Marissa gardened because it was her job and I ate fresh delicious tomatoes. And made homemade popcorn. And some root vegetable. And saw some pretty sunflowers.

This trampoline park. Also not Greensboro specific but also super fun. And the site of one of my favorite pictures of me and Marissa of all time. Guess which one.

This giant set of drawers IS Greensboro specific. Or, more accurately, High Point, NC specific. This is where all of the furniture in the world comes from (or something like that).

We went to the Duke Lemur Center. This is home to the world’s largest and most diverse lemur population outside of Madagascar. All research is non invasive, and it was a fun place to visit and walk around, completely surrounded by foreign creatures. You could get close and the animals didn’t bother you or touch you – my favorite kind of animal.

We finished up the day with a visit to Duke’s campus. And got ice cream.

This is us at the Smith Street Diner. We went there every time I visited, because Southern biscuits. Obviously. Honestly though, if you’re ever in Greensboro please eat there. And please get something with a biscuit. Or just get some biscuits to go (we have been known to bring them back on airplanes and stuff).

Greensboro minor league baseball. We did this a few times. Marissa lived basically across the street from the stadium, tickets rounded down to zero dollars, and there were fireworks. It was a fun outing even for those of us non baseball fans.

These pictures are just from when we got stuck in Greensboro because our flight was canceled, then the next morning our flight got canceled again so we rented a car and drove back to NYC. I think our flight was canceled due to nothing. It was a thing when there was a tiny bit of rain in NY and they’d cancel GSO flights because they needed more air space and the flights from most other locations were already in the air. Since GSO was such a short flight that hadn’t taken off yet, on a small-ish plane with less people, we got booted. Twice. Marissa had this experience more than me.

Marissa, I’m sorry I couldn’t do justice to the city you once called home. I realize that when you are just walking around a city and you know you’ll be back many times, you don’t bother to make an itinerary or take pretty pictures. I looked at my pictures and realized we weren’t tourists, you lived there. I had no itinerary and nothing super specific to speak of, and therefore ended up basically only writing about things outside of the actual city. That doesn’t mean I didn’t love it there. It was fun, we ate great food, and there was Marissa.

If you want to really learn about Greensboro itself, Marissa is your go to person. You can also check her blog, cakeinmoface, that she started while living there. It’s a lifestyle blog with no specific theme or direction, so it’ll never make her famous like mine will one day with all of my many many followers.

I’ll finish my southern blog series by leaving you with this beautiful picture, because, #thesouth.
